Esther's Birthday

When I asked Esther what she wanted for her birthday cake she said "Lots of princess cakes!"  So in order to fulfill that wish, I made four mini-cakes, each with it's own princess theme, which Esther chose.  Can you tell which princess each cake is themed after?

This purple one is the Rapunzel cake.
This pink one is the Aurora cake.
This blue one is the Cinderella cake (Esther's favorite).
This blue and red one is the Snow White cake.
Esther got a pink doctor kit from Grandma Smith (thanks again Grandma!).
Princess Esther ready for her tea party!
Esther got a mini tea set for her birthday, so we invited a couple of her friends over for a tea party.  Everyone dressed up as princesses and Aiden was Prince Charming.
It was impossible to get a picture with everyone looking, so this is the best we could get.  :)

Esther was so excited for her lunch of macaroni and cheese, chicken nuggets, oranges and carrots (her favorites).
Queen Robyn also got dressed up for the tea party.  :)
After dinner that night Esther set up a tea set with her stuffed animals.  Notice they're leaned up against the Darth Vader helmet.  :)
The next morning I made pancakes for breakfast.  These were the best pancakes of the lot.  :)
Mike and mom took the kids sledding one afternoon.  :)  They had a ball.  We have since received MUCH more snow and the sledding is much better.  :)
Here's Esther several days after her birthday, wearing the adorable dress she got for her birthday.  She's wearing a pinafore mom!  :)  Gotta love thrift store finds like this classic dress!  :)

Mike's Birthday

Back in January Mike had a birthday!  Unfortunately I did not do a very good job of recording it with pictures!  Mom Larson was in town and we had so much fun celebrating with her.
Here's Mike with his birthday cake:
Grandma helped me and the kids make the following picture for their present to Mike.  The butterflies are the kids footprints.  With wiggly kids it didn't work as perfect as I imagined, but I still love it.
The day after Mike's birthday we went down to visit Brian and Anna (but I didn't get a picture with them!  Fail!).  We gave Mike a set of STAR WARS Mr. Potato Heads.  Aiden loved playing with them under the table.  :)
Brian and Anna also made Mike a birthday treat: cream cheese brownies (YUM!).  Mike actually turned 29, but Brian and Anna could only find a 2 and a 3 for candles, so we stuck them on the cake.  :)
Happy Birthday to the most amazing man in the world!

My Opinion of Les Miz the movie

This is Robyn posting.  So if you really loved Les Miserables the movie, you probably don't want to read this post.  We are all entitled to our opinions.  I'll respect yours and would appreciate it you respect mine.  I'm not interested in arguing about it.
Here's my straightforward opinion: I didn't like it.
Here's why in no particular order:
*I love the musical too much that I didn't like the changes to the lyrics and context of the songs.  Although the new way they filmed the songs live was a different approach, I would have preferred more consistency with the songs.  It really bugged me that there wasn't a rhythm or beat to many of the songs.  And I kept focusing on what they were doing wrong that I couldn't appreciate the songs for what they were.  I tried approaching the movie as a totally different form of entertainment from the musical, but I found I couldn't because I love the musical too much.
*It was too graphic for me.  One thing I hadn't considered was that in the stage version they are very limited in how they kill people.  In the movie they were very graphic with it.  I found that I had my hands in front of my eyes for much of the movie.  Also I knew that they would address the prostitution of Fauntine, but I was hoping they would do so tastefully.  I was disappointed.  I found it vulgar and offensive.  I do not watch PG-13 movies because they are usually too violent and sexualized. I was hoping that this movie would be different, and that they would be tasteful in how they portrayed the hard circumstances they addressed.  They weren't.
*I've walked out of my fair share of movies, but I didn't walk out of this movie.  I'm wishing I had. I left the movie feeling depressed and disappointed in myself. I felt like I needed to take a shower to clean off all the filth from the movie.
*I love the book Les Miserables because of the way the characters learn to love God and the redemption the characters receive from turning their lives over to Him.  Some of this was taken out of the story when it was turned into a musical, but I found nearly all of it was gone in the movie.  Although the characters were singing about God, it felt hallow and fake.

Now, all that being said there were some good and a couple great moments in the movie.  However there weren't enough of those moments to justify the whole movie.  For some reason I felt like I needed to see the movie "to find out for myself" what it was like.  I wish I hadn't.  Sigh.  Now I'm re-committed to finding wholesome and uplifting entertainment.  I think I'm going to go read the novel Les Mis and listen to my favorite recording of the musical.  :)  My favorite is the Original 1988 Complete Symphonic Recording, for those who were curious.  :)

The Blues

This is a post that I've been thinking about writing for a while, but have postponed it for one reason or another.  This is going to be more of a serious post, and possibly a little depressing, so if you're not up for that, just skip this post.  I will be talking about SAD and depression, which can make some people uncomfortable, so if you're one of those people, just skip this post.
I have been diagnosed with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).  This means that as the seasons change, so does my mood.  A very mild case of this is called Winter Blues.  Unfortunately I have a rather moderate case of SAD.  For me this means that the short, dark days of winter send me into depression.  January and February are the hardest months because it's been dark for months and reprieve from winter is still months away.
Although the exact cause of SAD is still unclear, what scientists do know is that for some people (like myself) winter causes a chemical imbalance.  For people with SAD, one of those chemicals, melatonin (the sleep hormone), is produced all day long rather than just at night. The result is that I find it difficult to get out of bed every morning.  I feel sluggish and slow all day and just want to nap.  I feel like I am in a fog all the time and have difficulty focusing on things.  Studies show that people with SAD also crave carbs and sugars in the winter, which makes it difficult to eat healthy and control weight.  This definitely happens to me. And I am just easily depressed.
Do you ever have mornings when it's just really hard to get out of bed and you just want to lie there?  That's how I feel every morning in the winter.  And I just want to sleep all day, every day.  The problem is sleeping doesn't make it better.  If anything, it makes it worse.  If I am not treating my SAD I end up laying on the couch all day unable to function as I should.  I make sure my kids are fed and safe, but I often go without lunch, or at best I grab a hot dog or candy bar. I cannot force myself to engage in play with my kids.  I don't enjoy life.  I cry all the time at completely unpredictable things.
This is a bit of what life is like for me in the winter if I do not treat my SAD.  I've been dealing with symptoms of SAD since middle school (18 years ago) but I have had it consistently for about 11 years.  I was officially diagnosed with SAD just over 2 years ago, right before Aiden was born.  At that time my therapist recommended some treatments, but I didn't really do any of them. I ask myself why, but I think I was probably too depressed to do anything at that point.  In the past 4 years I've relied on a fabulous support network of family and friends.  This network has gotten me through the long and rather miserable winters here in Wisconsin.
But this winter I find myself without some of this support network.  Many of these friends have moved away for residencies in different states.  I've realized that I can't just rely on other people to help me with my SAD.
Since SAD is a seasonal depression I have been seeking treatment without medication.  This has included a conscious effort to eat healthier and exercise as well as getting as much sunlight as I can.  The biggest change has been my light box.  Studies have shown that light therapy helps "shut off" the daytime production of melatonin.  My light box looks just like this lightbox (image found here).

I sit with my light box in front of me everyday.  The idea is that the light mimics the sunlight and tricks the brain into shutting off the melatonin production.  My light box has a UV filter on it so it doesn't damage my eyes.  I like to do my scripture study and "fun" reading while I'm doing my light therapy.  Since we're in the depths of winter right now, I find I need about an hour and half of light therapy every morning in order to feel okay.
So I have light therapy, eating right and exercising to help me treat my SAD.  If I'm doing good and keeping up on doing these things I feel almost normal in the winter.  I can get up and do things, I have fun with my kids, and it's not a huge chore to make healthy(ish) food for my family.  Other things that would help treat my SAD, but that I'm not consistent with are the following: plan one not-chore thing I want to accomplish that day (get really ready with my hair and makeup done, write a letter to a friend, get a certain book from the library, sew something, etc) and work towards accomplishing it; going on regular dates with my sweetheart; getting outside on not too freezing days (just seeing the sun makes a huge difference); regular get togethers with friends; and any other thing that I can look forward to (like a play coming to town, a movie, or a holiday).
So why am I sharing all of this on my blog?  Well this is my reality right now.  I have to deal with my SAD every day and although it's not a pretty reality, it is my life.  I feel like many of the people who know me right now, may not know the real me.  I feel like the real me is how I am in the spring and summer when the days are longer and the sun comes out.  I have energy and I am out and about doing things, being with friends and creating things.  Sometimes I'm downright hyper with all the sunshine.  And you know what?  I love being that version of myself.  One of the hardest parts of having SAD is knowing who I am in the spring and not being able to be that person in the winter.  But I hope to find a treatment plan that will help me feel more like my "real" self.
In the meantime I hope that people who read this will come to understand me a little better and maybe even understand a little more about how the change in seasons affects them.  If you have any questions about SAD, feel free to talk with me about it.  I have enjoyed researching it and am an open book about my struggles with it.  If you want to read more about SAD I would HIGHLY recommend the book "Winter Blues: Everything You Need to Know to Beat Seasonal Affective Disorder" by Norman E. Rosenthal (the 4th edition is the most recent).  It has literally been a life changing book for me, and at the very least is very informative.

Pictures from December 2012

To start off December we decorated our Christmas tree. :)  Esther was a great helper!
Growing up we would always take a picture of the person putting the angel on the top of the tree, so we've kept up that tradition too.  :)
Esther and Aiden were looking at the toy catalog and telling us what they wanted.  :)
One random day we used boxes and made robot masks.  There's a song called Robot Parade, so we were singing that song as we marched around the house.  Never heard that song?  Click here.
We had our friend, Jacob, come over one morning. It was so much fun playing cars and playdough.  :)
This next picture cracks me up.  I had gotten the cheese out of the fridge and found bite marks in it.  Apparently Aiden had tried to take a bite out of the cheese, even though it was still in the plastic packaging.  :)
Below we were acting out the nativity.  We did the nativity for FHE the first week in December and acted it out every single day in December.  We still act it out on occasion because the kids like it so much.  :)
"No room in the inn."

Baby Jesus was born!
Aiden was the cutest little Joseph (or Jofus as he says).
The wise people coming with gifts.
What a beautiful gift!
We went downtown to ride the Jingle bus.  They had this anamatronic display that fascinated the kids.
Personally I found it a tad bit creepy... :)
We walked around afterwards and found this cute gazeebo with a Christmas tree in it.  I thought the industrial look was super cool.  :)
We were getting ready to go out one day and I wanted to take a picture of Aiden. This was his response when I asked him to smile.  :)
We went with some friends to go see Santa Clause downtown.  It was a long, but fun wait.  :)

We had some hot cocoa that afterwards.  :)  Aiden was saying "Ewwww" in the picture below.
So then the boys decided to say "Ewwwww" too, which made Aiden giggle. :)
Here's my cutie patootie kids!  :)

And a family picture (which I was going to use for the Christmas card that I never got done).  :)

Our ward had a night in Jerusalem for the Christmas party.  Mike and Aiden were sick, so I took Esther with me.
She kept telling everyone that she was Mary.  :)

On Christmas Eve we had some snow so we went out to play in it!  :)  The kids were so excited!  :)
Christmas Eve PJ's.  :)
I'm not posting the pictures from Christmas morning because we were all a little sick and we look rather rough.  But believe me, it was a great day and we had so much fun!
Below we're all ready to ring in the new year on New Years Eve.
We had sparkling cider with little umbrellas in our glasses.  Esther thought they were great toys.  :)
We even banged on pots to ring in the new year.  The kids had no idea that it was only 9pm, but that was super late for them! :)
And that was a short recap of our December.  :)
